These were found in the original Legend of Zelda. They were all hidden. You had to bomb walls or burn down trees in order to find these hidden locations. Each time you entered one, you had to pay 20 rupees to that old man.

At times I hated these things and at other times, I thought they were hilariously awesome. Back when I played Legend of Zelda for the first time in the mid 90's, I didn't have no faq of any sort on where I was suppose to go. Just wandered around randomly. Some of my friends had played the original Legend of Zelda and gave me hints on where secret locations were. So I'd go on my quest to discover all the secrets. Would burn every single tree in hopes to find some secret location. Only to enter to find a dark Door Repair.

The first time I found one, I was like, what the heck? I find a secret location and I have to pay 20 rupees? What exactly was that old man doing enclosed in a hidden cave with the front entrance blocked off? Overal though, these were a cool addition. Even though they were a bad thing, I always wanted to go and find them anyway, hehe.

When I first found one, I was kind of irritated because I didn't feel like losing a bunch of my hard earned money. There are also places where I've been payed 100+ rupees, because the man said something like, "Here's (insert rupee amount), don't tell anyone about this place". Those were nice.

The first one I found, if I remember correctly, was in one of the squares east of the start with the scattered trees and octoroks. Once, I burned a tree near the left side of one of those screens and found a medicine shop, but my save files were deleted or something and I started over, but this time I burned a similar tree in the wrong (but very similar-looking) screen.

I actually found medicine shops before I knew what the letter was, as I bought Zelda I used in 1993-ish and it already had save files on it. I thought that was how it was supposed to be until all the files were deleted mysteriously one day...

Seriously though, what is with the Old Man in these caves. He is trapped in his own personal cave, with nothing except two small fires. There is no way into these caves until Link blasts open a hole in the wall using his bombs. Does anybody else find this rather weird. Some old dude, hiding in a cave in the middle of Hyrule? Lol. Was picture is Nintendo trying to draw for us with this?

Well, whatever he's doing, at least he's doing it by himself in a cave.

Maybe they were hiding from Ganon(dorf) or something like that.

They were definately hiding from Ganon. Why else would they have gotten angry at you for ruining their non-existent door? Another question that comes from this is why were some of them hiding in a monster infested dungeon?

Haha, I remember when I first found one of those. I had no idea what was going on. That is kind of weird though, an old man hiding in a cave with two fires. How does he eat?

The fires would probably serve the purpose of lighting and cooking food...and for food maybe there are rats or something in the cave.

I've never actually found any of these...but now I'll go to one just for the heck of it.

I hear keese are pretty good with magic mushrooms.

Like likes are good diced, and lightly sautéed with a side of deku nuts, and a sprinkling of magic powder for flavour. for a garnish, try gathering some deku leaves or Takkuri feathers, and serve in a Moldorm shell.

I think that they need to just toss this in one of the newer games as a small cameo type thingy. It would maybe absolute hilarious. Imagine if in Twilight Princess you enter a secret cave and the guy won't let you leave unless you pay him. That would be brilliant and it would be great nostalgia for old time fans of the series.

By the way, I truly love the over exagerated analysis of these Door Repairs, hehe. Trying to find things that he eats and things to use the small camp fires for. Absolutely brilliant. :)

Hey, that's us Zelda fans. We analyze things to a fault. :)
And I agree, that would be great if they implemented the door repair thing in the new Zelda game coming out in a year or two.

They have brought it back, if you ever played The Wind Waker. You go inside a certain house that is full of valuables and if you break any of the vases, the rich guy that lives there will make you pay for it.

Ah ya that dude. That is true, I suppose they got the idea from the original door repairs. I think it would be cool if it was a bit more direct. Like, make the gamer think it is actually a secret they discovered, and then they'll be like, what the heck.

But ya, the guy on Windfall Island, I do remember that. Good catch, I completely forgot about that.

Yep, that's him. Just a merchant.

I never really noticed that thing from the Windwaker. It is a bit like to Door Repairs in a way. I remember I used to break the vases for fun.

There are also those old men hidden under trees and such in the Oracle games. Some would give you a lot of money, and some would take a lot (usually 100 or 200 rupees either way). I've noticed a lot of similarities between (especially) Oracle of Seasons and Zelda 1. A lot of the bosses are clearly based on Zelda 1 bosses, and there's that room in the first dungeon where you get the...ember seeds, I think. It looks like the side-scrolling rooms in Zelda 1 with dungeon items in them.

linkman8
02-15-2008, 02:38 PM
Oh aye, I remember that. In the Oracles games there would be side-scrolling rooms in some dungeons, but they were usually very small percentages of the dungeons.
Anyway, way off topic there. I can't remember there being the door repair guys in the Oracles games, but maybe I'll have to touch up on them a bit as well.

There's definitely one in Seasons close to the second dungeon, just south of the house where you get the shovel. Burn one of the saplings to find him.

I don't really remember the Oracle of Seasons one, I'll check it out sometime when I throw seasons in. It has been awhile for that one.

Pay me for the door repair charge. I find this wording to be awkward in the first place. Is that the first thing somebody would say when you blast open a hole. I wonder what the old guy was thinking. How about...

"Who the heck are you? You just detonated a bomb to find my secret little cave, and now you want me to give you a heart container? Pfff. Pay me for the door repair charge"

Now that is more like it.

Realistically, I'm sure there would be some cussing and the use of sharp objects involved :)
What do you think these old men are doing in their caves? Sorta weird if you ask me. In LoZ they're probably hiding from Ganon...but why would they go into a cave and seal off the entrance, basically locking themselves in there forever >.<

Hmm.. Maybe they're living a life of seclusion as a hermit in an attempt to "Find themselves" like some do in real life. :D

I'm a bit more interessed how they locked themself in a cave in that way... hiding in a cave to escape angry Moblins crossing almost every screen, that sound logical, but why plant a tree over the entrance? And how the heck did they get that tree there anyway... The same with the mountaincaves, how did that man manage to block the entrance with a boulder in the size of that?

If they actually did that by themselfs, it's a bit more understanding why they're so upset when Link just comes and blow up a lifetime work just like that... but why take 20 rupees? What would that make for them? I really don't hope they're going to just by a new boulder and take it to the cave... whoa... or is there a secret Hylian corporation that plants trees over caves for twenty rupees...?

There's too much unkown with these caves.

Thats pretty far fetched there guy. We cant make bogus conspiracies about caves in LoZ. From what you should have learned by now, Link does things on a more aggressive side...uses bombs to blow of random areas, burns all kinds of trees and such..pretty much just his way of getting to where he needs to go.

Ya haha, wouldn't it be hilarious if there was an 'evil old man' who was controlled by Ganon and he actually was a boss battle.

Hmm.. Maybe they're living a life of seclusion as a hermit in an attempt to "Find themselves" like some do in real life. :D

That seems possible, or what Zeypher said, they were just hiding from Ganon. It seems those types of people would be a bit nicer than basically forcing Link to pay and then leave.

Haha, thats completely true. Trees take awhile to grow so if they planted a tree just above a secret cave of some sort, it would take awhile to grow. Must meen those old men, secret shops, potion shops, and any other misc under tree cave must have been there long ago. Must not be good business for those shop keepers.

20 rupees must be the going rate for tree planting in the world of Hyrule, lol. Would be hilarious if there actually was a firm that planted trees. You burn a tree then later come to the screen and see two workers planting a tree. That would be hilarious.

Then it would be even more hilarious if they yelled at you for killing their tree, and then they attacked you with shovels and trowels.

I found them. I found all of them. At the time I was looking for more rupees, because I rarely had enough to get through the game. So I went to look for guides, found one, the only problem was that it didn't tell you which ones gave you money, and which ones didn't. That didn't end up to well. I think I lost more money then I got.

... Wow, I never even knew those existed. The again, I never even finished the first game because I had no clue on where to go next after you finished a dungeon. It's pretty hilarious though, rupees were already scarce in the game, unlike every game after ALttP

Off the top of my head I only know of one in Oracle of Ages. The screen below the entrance to Rolling Ridge's Graceful Goron thing. If you burn the tree in the present he takes money and if you burn it in the past he gives you money.

I thought in the first quest, there was a pretty abundance of rupees. So many Secret Rupee Locations or Moblin Hideouts, whichever you'd like to call them. Then again, I'm sure most people didn't find those randomly either.

I just thought running around the overworld and defeating enemies led to Link gathering rupees pretty quickly and rather easily. The Octoroks, Tektites, and Leavers gave me rupees quite often.

Imagine if the Door Repairs were similar to the Moblin Hideouts though, where there were different amounts that you had to pay. "Pay me for the door repair charge" and it its -100 rupees. Now that would be rediculous. They should have had that in the Second Quest. :)

That pretty much is it yes. I guess it's to even out the moblin caves, where you instead get money from a moblin telling you "it's a secret to everybody", but otherwise it's just a very fun addition to the game.

There's also the "chance" ones, where it's a moblin or old man that allow you to pick one of three rupees that can subtract or add a predetermined amount of rupees to/from your wallet.

Pretty much. The Door Repairs are just there with the Moblin Hideouts and the Gambling game locations. There are caves and secret caves all over the entire overworld. Part of what made the Legend of Zelda so great was that there were so many of these secrets. I think when fans were uncovered these secrets they were excited, even if it was a door repair and you had to pay 20 rupees. The fact that they found a secret was exciting enough in my opinion.

Sitting down for the evening? The only way you could possibly get out is by bombing down the door, so I don't really understand that.

But I guess Nintendo just has it's ways.

I was assuming that the door was a fake bush or tree with a secret opening that Link so kindly made not-so-secret.

I guess these secret caves are there to show that not all secret caves you discovered will contained treasures or it was a shop. The cave could be a simple resident and you have to pay for breaking the door.

Think about it. Say you were sitting down for dinner, or, say, a movie, and some random dude blows a freakin huge hole in the front wall of your house. Would you not want to kick his *** right there, right then? Think about it. Now say you lived in a cave, you were an old man, and the random dude is a 10 year-old elf in tights, with a sword and shield, saying "hi can I have a piece of heart or money for vandalizing?". See what I mean? THINK ABOUT IT REAL HARD.
