I'm on level 6 of Phantom Hourglass & have a few questions that I hope some of you may be able to answer for me.
1) I've noticed on a few islands that there are these sort of poles near the edge of the island that you can stand on top of, I know that it has to be there for a reason, has anyone figured it out?
2) On Mercay Island, I noticed that there is a small island to the upper right side right next to Mercay, how do you get to it?
3) Also on Mercay Island on, next to the entrance of the Mountain Passage that is over the bridge, there is another platform to the right which is a bit higher. I noticed that on that platform there are 2 treasure chests but I can't get to them. Also I noticed on the map that on that same upper platform there is another set of stairs. How do you get to that platform?
On a side note, I found it hilarious that when you keep bugging those cukko's (the chickens) they end up turning red & then a whole flock of them attack you! LOL!

Okay, I finished up writing the guide for this section so I will just post the corresponding section. If you still have trouble then I'll explain further.
- There still is more to do, but on the north side of the island. Make your way around the island as if you were going to the Temple of the Ocean King. Remember the Bomb Cavern we went through before? Head inside the cave once again and defeat the rats. Jump on over to the right and you will see an eye switch next to the treasure chest we opened before. Use the bow and arrow to hit it and it will create a bridge leading downwards to the rest of the cave.
- Cross the bridge and you will run into a Zora Warrior. Use the boomerang to stun it in its back and then strike him in the back to defeat him. Exit the cave at the bottom. There is a stone tablet just to your left. Read it and it will tell you of a secret weak spot in the area. It tells you to shine a beam parallel with a line between the temple and Mercay Tavern.
- You will also notice there is an eye switch on your left but it is a bit higher. Just head up the steps on the right to the higher ledge and then aim at the switch. Nail it with an arrow and one of those beam statues will pop up. Remember what the tablet just read. Bring up your map and draw a line between the Temple of the Ocean King and the Mercay Tavern. Remember, the Tavern is the large building within Mercay. Don’t mind this for now but continue right and around this higher area.
- You will come across two treasure chests in the southern part of the higher level. Open them both to get a Big Green Rupee and a new Ship Part! Now return to the north part of the island and return to the strange beam statue. Strike at it to create a beam and then tap the statue and turn it so it is shining a light parallel to the line you just drew. It will be point northwest at a random area on the island.
- Jump off the ledge to the north and follow where the beam is aiming at and you will see that it is pointing at a random wall. Something must be up with this wall, why not try to blow it open with a bomb. Place a bomb and it will do that just that, explode open an opening to a second bomb cavern on the island. Enter the cave.
- Walk through the cave, down some steps, and you’ll come across a long bridge. About half way across, pull out your boomerang and trace a line down. When the screen extends a bit you will see a switch. Nail it with the boomerang and a treasure chest will appear on the right side of the bridge. Run on over it and open it up to get a courage gem.
- Now continue to the right and exit the cave at the end of the tunnel. You’ll be at the northeast small island on Mercay and you’ll here some calming music being played. Head to the left and up two sets of stairs and you will find a new character, Freedle.
- After being very pleased to meet you, he will single you a song entitled, “Magic Box”. He just explains briefly about being able to trade ship parts and treasure with friends. This is completely optional and it is through the Wi-Fi multiplayer mode, perfect for those of you trying to complete your ship collection later in the game. If you aren’t trading with friends, you shouldn’t place any treasure or ship parts here because they have value to you in the game.
- Continue to the right and you will come across a treasure chest. Open it up to get a wisdom gem.
- Rather than heading back through the Bomb Cavern again, there is actually a shortcut here. Head to the four south of this island and you will see a small switch. Step on it and it will create a bridge to the main part of Mercay Island. Awesome, now you don’t have to go the long way anymore. That’s all we have to do at Mercay for now, so run back over to Linebeck and set sail.

Later in the game, when you get the grappling hook, you'll figure out what the posts are for. Kinda like the hook-shot in older Zelda games, if you've played any of those. Actually, if you're on "level 6," you might have it by now. Try shooting it at the posts. If the post is too close to the shore, and you keep falling off, try stringing the rope between two posts, and you can walk across it.
2) On Mercay Island, I noticed that there is a small island to the upper right side right next to Mercay, how do you get to it?
If you're where I think you are, you need the arrows, and the bombs. There's a cave you can go into, and a series of puzzles and stuff. It's really quite detailed. Here's a walkthrough that discusses it. Scroll down to section J.

And you come out on the island. Then you can hit a switch to make a bridge.
I don't remember those. If they're where I think you're describing, you might run into them on your way to Freedle's island.
On a side note, I found it hilarious that when you keep bugging those cukko's (the chickens) they end up turning red & then a whole flock of them attack you! LOL!
The cukku swarm. A classic Zelda easter egg, dating back (as far as I know) to A Link to the Past.
Edit: Or, you could just do what Masses says.

Great! Thank you! I don't have the bow & arrow yet though. I haven't gone back to the temple to complete that section yet which I think is where I end up getting the bow & arrow. It has just been puzzling me for a while so I thought I'd ask about it. Also, on Moilda Island (I think that's where I saw it) there is another chain of little islands next to it, 3 tiny ones...I noticed that on the highest of the 3 there is a barrel which I hit with my boomerang & a "chicken" was inside which I assume I would have to use to glide over to the other smaller islands, how do you do that if you can't jump over to pick up the chicken? There was another treasure on one of those. And on Ember Island there is another treasure chest on a tiny island on the upper left side which I can't get to either.

It's been a week or more since I've been there, but I'm pretty sure you can get to one of the islands using the grappling hook, and then use the chicken to hop from island to island. You might have to go up north towards the temple of courage to get to a good spot where you can grapple across.

Thanks again! I don't have the grappling hook yet. Where do I get it?
I love this game! It had been ages since I played any Zelda games. I only played it when I was younger, I think it was the 1st Zelda that came out with Nintendo. I was furious at my little brother because of course he was the spoiled one & it was his Nintendo...after I was almost done with the game, he sold/traded the Nintendo along with all the games for another game system! I missed Zelda! I'm 30 now & when I saw that they came out with this game for the DS, I was excited. My husband bought it for me for my birthday & I can't get enough of it. Unfortunately, I can't play as much as I'd like to because I have an 8 mth old that keeps me busy. I get to play at least once a day when she's napping! LOL!

You mentioned you don't have the bow and arrow yet. I think you get that in the temple of courage, which is the third dungeon. It's on Moilda island. The grappling hook is in the Temple of Frost, if I remember right, which is the 5th dungeon, which you don't get to until after you've beaten the ghost ship.
In each dungeon, you get a new item, and items typically allow you into previously inaccessible areas. So after you get a new item, you get to go back, and find new rupies, treasures, features, areas to explore, or whatever.
I've been playing for about a month now. I play about an hour a night. The last couple of weeks or so, I've just been holding back, taking my time, gathering ship parts, playing minigames, and stuff. I'm just about at the end, but I'm in no hurry. I plan to stretch it out until Christmas. My wife said she got me something really cool, which I think might be something for the Wii. So by then, I might be ready for something else.
