Photoshop Contest: Rise of the Machines
Posted on July 23 2016 by Rod Lloyd
Hello, Zelda fans. Let’s put an end to a long work week with Zelda Informer’s weekly Photoshop Contest. Inspired by a series of technological frustrations I experienced over the last five days, this week’s contest will focus on the robots, machines, and otherwise mechanical entities from the Zelda series. This loose theme should provide contestants with several creative approaches to take, so I hope many of you will join us this week. Let rise the Zelda machines, and check out the winners of last week’s contest: The Legend of Zelda GO.
Last Week’s Contest:
With the Pokémon Go frenzy fully ramped up, last week’s contest asked entrants to pitch their ideas for a similar Zelda-focusedaugmented reality phone app.

Challenge Mode
Given that Pokémon Go offers both in-game and augmented reality elements, last week’s Challenge Mode tasked contestants with showing both in-game and real-life hazards within their Zelda Go app. Artist MaryKatherine Feehan accepted the challenge and masterfully offered a mouth-watering glimpse of what a Zelda Go could really look like. Feehan’s entry shows how players could explore a top-down map (perhaps as a Zelda-fied version of their geographical map), catch Big Poes by presumable flicking bottles, and even bomb some Dodongos in their backyards. I have a feeling that some inattentive readers will see this excellent ‘shop as they scroll the site and think Zelda Go is a real thing. Great job!
This Week’s Contest: Rise of the Machines
I have had a pretty crazy week. My neighborhood experienced a mysterious internet outage for three days, I fought through problems with Zelda Informers back-end systems yesterday, and I’ve been doing innocuous research on some Zelda robots for an upcoming feature. All of these elements came together to inspire a technology-centric Photoshop Contest this week.
The contest this week is to ‘shop an image featuring a robot, machine, or other technological entity from the Zelda series. Fi, Scervo, and Wind Waker‘s Gohdan are all acceptable characters to highlight, or you can even utilize some mechanical weapons / items like the Pictobox, the Spinner, or Breath of the Wild‘s Sheikah Slate. We put some possible images in the gallery below, but feel free to use anything you find on the net.
General Rules: Submit your entries in the comments section below.
- To save images from the gallery, right click the image in the gallery (without opening the image in lightbox) and select open image in new tab. Go up to the address bar and delete __small from the URL. Hit enter, right click, and save!
- Photoshop is not required to enter the contest. Any image manipulation software can be used to create your entry.
- Some hand-drawn fan art is okay, but your entry must include some image manipulation to be considered.
- If you use another fan’s original assets or likeness, please try to give them credit.
- Please refrain from using offensive material (racial, sexual, overuse of offensive language, etc.) We want to make the contest fun and accessible for fans of all ages.
- Everyone is entitled to their own opinion at Zelda Informer. In fact, we encourage discussion based on those opinions. However, please do not insult other fans’ work. What may be funny to one person may not hold true for another…and that’s OK.
- Have fun and be creative!
Deadline: Submit entries no later than Thursday at midnight: 11:59 p.m. PST on July 28. Entries submitted after this Deadline will not be considered.
Challenge Mode
For those that who want to test their skills with something more challenging, we have a few Challenge Rules for you to follow:
1. Your entry must include a famous film robot.
2. Your entry must include a mechanical horse.
If you think you’re up to the challenge, include the phrase Challenge Accepted with your submission. Remember, Challenge Mode submissions follow the same rules and guidelines of the base Photoshop Contest in addition to the Challenge Rules.
Good luck!
